A veteran teacher at Wilson High School was arrested early Tuesday evening and charged with making videotapes of unsuspecting female students while they dressed in a locker room at the school.
John W. Crute, 45, of the 400 block of Sussex Drive, turned himself in to police at about 6 p.m., said police spokesman G.A. Brown.
Crute, a well-known track coach at Wilson, was charged with two felonies associated with producing photographs or videotapes of juveniles.
Crute was released Tuesday night on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond. He was to appear today at 9 a.m. in Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
The most recent incident, Brown said, involved the videotaping of a 15-year-old female student at Wilson sometime between July 29 and 31.
That tape was discovered in a video camera found at Wilson over the weekend by a policeman working as a liaison officer at the school. The camera was in a storage room adjacent to the female students' locker room.
``The camera had been strategically placed by a hole in the wall which allowed the photographing of unsuspecting females who were utilizing the locker room,'' Brown said.
Police said an unspecified number of photographs and videotapes were found during a search of Crute's home Monday.
``Investigators will be viewing these seized tapes to establish the duration of any illegal tapings and establish the identity of any other possible victims,'' Brown said. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
