NOT GREAT FISHING, BUT NOT BAD, EITHER

Anglers on piers along the northern beaches landed a variety of fish Tuesday.

A few speckled trout, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and triggerfish were taken off Kitty Hawk Pier.

Avalon Pier reported some bluefish and Spanish mackerel taken from the end of the pier during the morning. A few bluefish, mackerel and trout were landed on jiggers during the day.

Some croaker, small bluefish, and a few nice Spanish mackerel were caught from Nags Head Pier. A handful of bottom fish were decked on Jennette's Pier.

Outer Banks Pier fishermen caught a few bluefish early in the morning, and some bottomfish and small blues during the remainder of the day.

On Hatteras Island, croaker, spot and an occasional mullet were taken on Rodanthe and Avon Piers. Small spot, croaker and bluefish were landed from Frisco Pier.

Surfcasters from Corolla to Oregon Inlet caught fair numbers of small bottom fish. A lot of fishermen caught a few trout in the sloughs south of Kitty Hawk Pier.

Small bottom fish, a few trout and tailor bluefish were landed around Oregon Inlet. Some good catches of sheepshead were reported from the pilings around the Oregon Inlet Bridge.

Plenty of croaker, a few spot and a handful of mullet were taken along the beach in deeper sloughs from Rodanthe to Buxton. Spanish mackerel fishing was excellent Monday evening at Cape Point. Action was fairly good again Tuesday morning.

Inshore trolling improved Tuesday morning with some good catches of Spanish mackerel reported from tide lines outside Oregon Inlet. Headboats around Oregon Inlet caught plenty of small croaker.

Billfishing was good northeast of Oregon Inlet. More than 45 fish were released, including six white marlin by the Temptress, four white marlin and two sailfish by the Pelican and three white marlin by the Dream Girl. Some dolphin, wahoo and a few tuna were also taken.

Dolphin fishing was good in the Gulf Stream off Hatteras. Plenty of bailers and gaffers were landed. Wahoo also were plentiful. A dozen or so billfish were released, including two white marlin by the Eagle.

A 483-pound blue marlin was landed by the Hatteraser. The marlin was brought to the dock because it was tailwrapped.

The return of warm, clear water inshore should produce improved Spanish mackerel for pier anglers along the northern beaches.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in duck was 79.5 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
