JUST ADD MEAT FOR DINNER SENSATIONS

COOKING DINNER is almost as easy as eating it with Betty Crocker's new Dinner Sensations.

These meals in boxes consist of a simmer sauce and dry rice or pasta. You add meat, simmer and serve.

You still have to cook the rice or pasta separately but there's no measuring, and all four varieties can be prepared in 30 minutes.

We tried the Sweet & Sour Chicken With Oriental-Style Rice and thought it was as good as similar fare at some area restaurants.

Each box, which makes 5 (1-cup) servings, costs about $2.29.

Though it's not printed on the package, Betty Crocker's parent company, General Mills, has set an e-mail address on the Internet so consumers can ask questions about Dinner Sensations and receive recipe variations: 74677.116(AT)compuserve.com. Of course, if you can't get on the information superhighway, you can still call General Mills at (800) 328-6787. WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE?

Rita's Italian Ice has expanded to Hampton Roads.

The store, which opened in Philadelphia in 1984, offers eight ice flavors daily, as well as soft pretzels and ice cream.

The new store is at 1521 Lynnhaven Parkway in Virginia Beach. Look for the red and white awning. FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES

H. Jackson Brown Jr., author of ``Life's Little Instruction Book,'' shares the wisdom of children in his latest offering, ``When You Lick a Slug, Your Tongue Goes Numb'' (Rutledge Hill Press, 1995).

Here are a few flavorful insights from the book:

``When you and a friend buy ice cream cones, your friend's flavor always looks better.'' - Amanda, age 13

``While making cookies, the dough always seems to taste better than the cookie.'' - Grace, 11

``You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.'' - Rosemary, 7.

``School lunches stick to the wall.'' - Patrick, 10. by CNB
