SUMMER EXHIBITS HAVE KID APPEAL

SUMMERTIME IS BUSY TIME at area museums.

There are several workshops, most for children, and diverse exhibits.

Here's a rundown of activities:

SUFFOLK MUSEUM

``Virginians on Time,'' 50 Time magazine covers featuring Old Dominion personalities, through Aug. 13; at Paul D. Camp Community College, through Sept. 11.

Aug. 3, Art Day: ``Sail Away Boats.'' Children make boats that float and learn the history of sailing ships. Cost, $1.

Free, 45-minute program on pollution - for the public - presented by Coast Guard Sea Partners before each session - from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for children 5 to 8, and from 1 to 3 p.m. for children 9 to 14.

Aug. 7-11: Art Camp, sponsored by Suffolk Art League, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The children will learn to make their own magazine. Today - Cartooning with Dixon Morrow; Aug. 8 - Printmaking, Wendy Byrd; Aug. 9 - Creative writing, Ann Woleben; Aug. 10 - Photography, Pamela Host; Aug. 11 - Graphic arts/Magazine cover, Linda Bunch.

Fee, $35 for Art League members, $45 for others. Individual classes $8 for league members, $11 for others. Materials and snacks included.

Aug. 19: ``The Indian, the Animal and the Land,'' Native American sculpture and art by Retha Walden Gambaro, photography by Stephen Gambaro, through Oct. 8.

Reception at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 3, followed by a lecture.

RAWLS MUSEUM

Aug. 5: Reception honoring ``Young at Art'' participants, ages 4 to 14, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Aug. 7-18: ``Young at Art'' exhibit.

Aug. 9 and 16: ``Artful Wednesdays.'' Classes on linoleum prints the first day, on clay the second. Heather Turner teaching beginner classes for children 7 to 14. Hours 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants must bring a bag lunch. The cost is $12 for members, $14 for others.

Aug. 21-25: ``Watercolor with Robert Burnell,'' one of Hampton Roads' most influential painters, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost, $140 for Rawls Art members, $150 for others.

RIDDICK`S FOLLY

``Bundles of Joy - Suffolk Babies,'' through Sept. 17.

Aug. 9: Candle-dipping workshop for children 8 and older, from 10 a.m. to noon. Supplies and refreshments included. Cost, $3 for Riddick's Folly Newsletter subscribers, $5 for others.

WAKEFIELD FOUNDATION

Aug. 6-27: Surrealistic/cartoon work of Suffolk artist Dixon Morrow. Opening reception at 6 p.m. today.

ROCHELLE-PRINCE HOUSE

Exhibit of railroad memorabilia, concentrating on items from Norfolk and Western Railway and The Virginian Railway, continues through the month.No special exhibits at Southampton Agriculture and Forestry Museum or the Isle of Wight Museum. Latter has added to its permanent collection a clock from the old P.D. Gwaltney Store, a general mercantile emporium once located on Commerce Street.
