NO ``SHOOTOUT'' DANGER

In a recent column, Guy Friddell remarked that the wholesale issuance of concealed-weapons permits only could lead to shootouts equal to that at the OK Corral.

Mr. Friddell, like many others, has his head in the sand. I suspect that a great many of those applying for permits have been carrying weapons for quite some time. Now they are taking the opportunity to do so legally.

If it is as Mr. Friddell portrays, why wouldn't these ``shootouts'' have occurred as often prior to July 1 as he thinks they will after? The penalties for the misuse of a concealed weapon apply equally, with or without a permit.
