Blue water action off Oregon Inlet was good Wednesday.
Dolphin were plentiful, with catches of 30 or more fish reported. About 30 billfish were released by the Oregon Inlet fleet. Fishing was spread from the 40850 to the 41100 Loran lines, north of the location of Tuesday's good action.
Tuna remained scarce, as they have been for several weeks.
Dolphin fishing was decent off Hatteras Inlet. Wahoo weighing between 15 and 30 pounds were plentiful in 35 fathoms of water. A blue marlin was released by the Hatteras Fever, and a white marlin by the Hatteras Fever II.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet improved, with limits of Spanish mackerel taken by half-day charters.
Headboats experienced excellent croaker fishing, both in the ocean and in the sound.
Pier fishing along the northern beach area was fairly good for small bottom fish. A few speckled trout were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier during the morning, and spot were caught during the day. A 56-pound cobia also was decked.
Avalon Pier reported fair numbers of small bottom fish and a few keeper flounders taken. Some Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed from the end of the pier on jiggers.
Fishermen on Nags Head Pier caught spot, croaker, sea mullet and tailor bluefish.
Some spot and croaker were taken on Jennette's Pier.
Croaker, a few pompano, trout, small bluefish and mullet were landed from Outer Banks Pier.
South of Oregon Inlet, pier fishing was slow because of a heavy ground swell. Piers reported only a few spot and croaker taken.
Surfcasters along the northern beaches caught scattered small bottom fish on bloodworms and shrimp.
A few trout were landed early in the morning south of Kitty Hawk Pier. Some spot, croaker and scattered bluefish were taken around Oregon Inlet.
Fair numbers of keeper speckled trout were caught from the Off Island channel behind the Bodie Island Light Wednesday morning.
Some croaker were taken along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Spanish mackerel were landed at Cape Point Tuesday evening. Seas were heavy at Cape Point Wednesday, so only a few blues and croaker were beached.
Some pompano were landed along the beach south of Cape Point, but action in the Hatteras Inlet area was slow.
Fishing should improve along Hatteras Island when sea conditions moderate.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 72 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
