Collin Credle of Portsmouth will be on one of the two baseball teams representing Virginia in the National 10-year-old-and-under Amateur Athletic Union Championship Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
The Tidewater Drillers placed first in a state qualifying tournament at First Colonial High School. The team is composed primarily of players from Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Credle is the lone Portsmouth participant.
The Virginia Blasters, also from South Hampton Roads, are the other state entry in the Aug. 5-12 Nationals.
A pitcher and first baseman, the 10-year-old Credle gained a berth on the squad when tryouts were held at First Colonial. He is a rising fifth-grader at Court Street Academy, which does not field a baseball team.
The Drillers won the qualifying tournament with a 4-2 victory over the Tidewater Cardinals.
The Drillers will leave today for Kansas City, flying out from Norfolk.
The first game for the Drillers, managed by Matt Sinnen of Virginia Beach, probably will be Sunday.
Another area team, the Virginia Heat (15-under), also has qualified for the Nationals in Millington, Tenn., Aug. 5-12. This team is composed of players from Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Suffolk.
The Virginia Heat defeated the Virginia Jazz, 10-4, in the state final at Virginia Wesleyan. ILLUSTRATION: Collin Credle will be play with the Tidewater Drillers in the
