The College of William and Mary is preparing for the biggest freshman class in its 302-year history - 1,414 students.
The Class of 1999 will break the 1988 record of 1,330.
Virginia Carey, the school's director of admissions, said the higher-than-expected number was related to a change in William and Mary's yield rate - the number of students who accept offers of admission. The rate jumped two percentage points from last year, to about 43 percent. The yield on in-state students was up 3 percent from last year.
Carey attributed the increase to a trend among Virginia residents to stay in state for school.
``We were surprised, but we're looking at it as a positive,'' said Provost Gillian T. Cell. by CNB
