WINDS KICK UP A BIT, FISHING SLOWS A BIT

Late southeast winds produced fairly slow pier fishing along the northern beaches on Thursday.

On Kitty Hawk Pier anglers caught a few spot. Avalon Pier reported a handful of spot, croaker, bluefish and small flounder taken. On Nags Head Pier some spot, mullet and small croaker were landed during the morning and a few spot over the afternoon.

Several spot, croaker and a couple of keeper flounder were taken from Jennette's Pier. On Outer Banks Pier, a few spot and pompano appeared in catches.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported slow fishing, with just a few croaker landed. Spot, croaker, sand perch and a few sea mullet were decked on Avon Pier. Action on Frisco Pier consisted of a few small spot and croaker.

Surfcasters along the northern beaches caught a few bottom fish. Along the beach south of Oregon Inlet, sea mullet fishing was good from Ramp 23 to Ramp 27. Some spot and croaker were also landed. Anglers on Cape Point caught some puppy drum on Wednesday night. Spanish mackerel were beached at the point on Thursday morning along the beach south of Cape Point to Hatteras Inlet.

Dolphin were plentiful eight miles off the inlet on gross lines. A few cobia were taken in the same area.

In the gulfstream off Oregon Inlet, fair numbers of bailer dolphin were taken. About 16 billfish were released by the Oregon Inlet and Pirate's Cove fleets.

Dolphin fishing was excellent in deep water off Hatteras. A few wahoo and scattered billfish were also taken.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was good on Thursday morning, with charters landing nice Spanish mackerel and a few blues. Headboat catches of croaker were fair around the inlet.

Fair numbers of spots, croaker, mullet and few pompano should be available in the surf along the Outer Banks this weekend.

Water temperature at the Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck on Thursday was 68 degrees. Water temperatures reported at piers in the Nags Head area were running in the upper 70s. by CNB
