It recently launched a joint venture with Norfolk-based Landmark Communications Inc. to put 100 newspapers on-line over the next two years. The venture operates under the name InfiNet and is also based in Norfolk. (Associated Press) Metro Machine wins repair job on destroyer

The brand-new destroyer Ramage arrived at Metro Machine Corp. on Wednesday for emergency repairs. The Norfolk shipyard got the Navy job because its drydock was available, a yard executive said. It will take about a week to repair a minor problem with one of the Ramage's propeller hubs. The value of the work hadn't been determined. ``It certainly comes at a nice time when we didn't have any ships in the plant,'' said Joe Gilbert, Metro vice president. Built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss., the destroyer was commissioned July 22 by the Navy. The repair is under the warship's warranty. President Clinton announced a $53 million disaster relief package Thursday to combat emergency fishing problems and put unemployed fishermen to work in New England, the Northwest and Gulf of Mexico. The biggest share of the money, about $25 million, will go to Northeastern states hit hard by declines in groundfish stocks. About $15 million will go to states along the Gulf of Mexico to assist the industry with uncharted seabed obstructions caused primarily by flooding. About $12 million will go to the Pacific Northwest, extending programs started last year to buy back fishing permits as well as put fishermen to work restoring fish habitat and counting fish for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
