VIRGINIA WESLEYAN NAMES INFORMATION SYSTEMS CHIEF

Virginia Wesleyan College has named its library director, Rene Perez-Lopez, to the new position of vice president for information systems.

``This promotion for Rene is a clear signal that Virginia Wesleyan intends to be a strong leader in the whole area of technology in the classroom,'' President William T. ``Billy'' Greer Jr. said. ``We're envisioning the classroom of the future to be much more than a blackboard and a podium. We envision it to be an arena in which all kinds of technology will come into play in the teaching of history, English, mathematics, political science.''

Greer called Perez-Lopez a ``visionary.''

``He has a feel for it, he has a desire for it, and we think he's the right person for this,'' Greer said.

Perez-Lopez, a native of Cuba, joined Wesleyan as library director in 1986. Before that, he worked for the Norfolk public library system for 13 years.
