MAN FOUND SEVERELY BEATEN IN CHESAPEAKE DIES AT HOSPITAL

A 27-year-old man who was found severely beaten in an apartment early Saturday died shortly after arrival at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Police were asking public assistance to learn what happened to the victim, identified as William M. Cribbs.

Tony Torres, a police spokesman, said officers were sent to the 1400 block of Jefferson Ave. about 3 a.m. and that people at the scene directed police to a nearby apartment.

Cribbs' body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's office in Norfolk for examination and a determination of the cause of death.

Torres said it was unclear what, if any, weapons were used to beat Cribbs or how many people were involved.

It was unclear whether Cribbs was ever conscious or able to give police any information before he died.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 547-6161 or Crime Line at 487-1234.
