William Burns

CHESAPEAKE - William Burns of the 2000 block of Midway Ave., a retired chief ship serviceman, died Aug. 3, 1995, in a local hospital.

Mr. Burns was born in Hamer, S.C. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 27 years and was a member of the Spouses Club and the Military Retirees Club of Tidewater.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Burns; four daughters, Vera McDuffie, Derrell Johnson, Linda Burns and Romania Whitehurst; a son, William Burns Jr.; five sisters; four brothers; nine grandchildren; one daughter-in-law; two sons-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Temple United Holy Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Gary W. Burns. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Arrangements by Graves Funeral Home. Friends may join the family at the residence. Sarah K. Oglesby

CHESAPEAKE - Sarah K. Oglesby, 56, of the 1100 block of S. Military Highway, died Aug. 5, 1995, in a Chesapeake hospital.

Mrs. Oglesby was born in Willisville, Ark.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Oglesby, Sr.; a daughter, Myrna Hassfield of Cape Carteret, N.C.; a son, Robert Oglesby, Jr., of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Shirley Martin of Fort Worth, Texas, and Jo Cogbill of Willisville, Ark.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge chapel. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the residence.

NORFOLK Willie E. Baker

NORFOLK - Willie Edward Baker, 100, of the 2700 block of Beachmont Avenue, peacefully entered heaven's realms on Thursday, August 3, 1995, at his home.

Mr. Baker, a native of Arapahoe, N.C., was the son of the late Alfred and Mary Sidney Baker and widower of Maude Hudson Baker. He retired as a machinist's helper from W.L. Shepard Company, and served in the European Theater during World War I. A devoted member of First Calvary Baptist Church, he served on the usher board and worked as a teller. He was also a member of the Free and Accepted Prince Hall Masons, Rising Sun Lodge (NU)2 and a lifetime member of the NAACP.

Survivors include one daughter, Lillie B. Saunders of Chesapeake, and a son, Clifton E. Baker of Norfolk; four grandsons, George G. Saunders Jr. and Eugene L. Saunders of Chesapeake, Edward B. Saunders of San Jose, Calif., and Darryl K. Saunders of Dayton, Ohio; five great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

The funeral will be held on Monday, August 7, 1995, at 12 noon by the Rev. Charles Springs at First Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. NORFOLK - Florence Bass of the 6900 block of Partridge St., a retired teacher, died Aug. 5, 1995, in her residence.

Mrs. Bass was born in Norfolk to the late Herman King and Bertha King. She retired from Norfolk Public Schools after 20 years and was a member of Intercessory Prayer Ministry and the Voices of Praise.

Survivors include her husband, John Bass; two daughters, Woodrina Layton and Nicole Bly; a son, Trenton Bly; a sister, Cora McRaft; four brothers, George King, Arthur King, James Clark and Herman King; a granddaughter, Marissa Layton; and a grandson, Martez Layton.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Deliverance Christian Center, 1010 E. 26th St., by Bishop Barbara Amos. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. NORFOLK - Charles Deloatch, Sr., of the 2200 block of Pretty Lake Ave., died Aug. 2, 1995 in a health care center.

Mr. Deloatch was born in Suffolk. He was a member of Open Door Chapel and was in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha Deloatch; a daughter, Angela James of Chesapeake; two sons, Charles Edward Deloatch, Jr. of Virginia Beach and Reginald Lorenza Deloatch of Norfolk; his mother, Annie Mae White; two sisters, Ethel L. Spencer and Gale B. White; four brothers, Lorenzo Davis, Arthur L. White, Robert White, Jr., and Darrell E. White; five grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

NORFOLK - Mary Elizabeth Gray of the 500 block of E. Liberty St. died Aug. 2, 1995.

Mrs. Gray was born in Pitt County, N.C. She was a retired domestic worker after 35 years and a member of Abyssinia Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Anne Gray Cross of Scotch Plains, N.J.; two sons, William Karneadale Gray of Norfolk and Keith Maurice Gray of Hampton; two sisters, Ida Lee Thigpen Cooper and Bessie Thigpen House, both of Greenville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

NORFOLK - Curtis Emerson Harris, 74, of the 2700 block of Beachmont Avenue, Norfolk, Va., died Friday, August 4, 1995, in the Norfolk Health Care Center. Mr. Harris, the only child of the late James R. and Minnie W. Harris, was born in Norfolk, Va. He was a 1938 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School.

He retired as a First Sergeant in the United States Army after 24 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was formerly employed by Graves Funeral Home where he became a Licensed Funeral Director. Later he became a courier for banks, including Virginia National, Sovran, Sovran C.S. and NationsBank, and retired in August 1994.

He was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn W. Harris; an aunt, Mrs. Helen W. Diggs, Suffolk, Va.; two sons, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several close relatives.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 1995, at noon in Queen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Peter Wherry. Interment will follow with military honors in Little Gilfield Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor, Va. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

NORFOLK - Monica Greer Mitchell, 36, of the 1300 block of Godfrey Ave., quietly slipped away to go home to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 2, 1995.

Born in Norfolk, Monica attended Garretts Community Church, Norfolk, from early childhood through her adult life. Monica was a graduate of Norview Senior High School and a graduate of Tidewater Maritime Training Institute.

Survivors include three daughters, Monjiri, Monet and Monique Mitchell; her mother, Earline Mitchell Hatchett; a brother, Clifton Hatchett III; and an uncle, Milton Mitchell, all of Norfolk; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Maurice Alonzo McInnis.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday at Abundant Life Christian Church, 228 W. Berkley Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. Donnie Small. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. PORTSMOUTH George A. Baker

PORTSMOUTH -

George Arthur Baker, 85, of the 100 block of Sykes Ave., a retired electrician, died Aug. 4, 1995, in Virginia Beach.

He was a native of Bath, S.C., retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, International Order of Oddfellows and Churchland Masonic Lodge (NU)276.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn H. Baker; two sons, George D. Baker of Greeley, Colo., and Philip M. Baker of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Esther Kay of Lancaster, S.C., and Florence Mae Brannen of Great Falls, S.C.; seven brothers, John Baker and Harry Baker, both of Charlotte, N.C., Wade Baker, Woodrow Baker and J. Morris Baker, all of Lancaster, S.C., and James Baker of Memphis, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Raymond Edmonds. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites. PORTSMOUTH - Alonzo Bernard ``Bunny'' Fane, 54, of the 1800 block of Cavalier Blvd., departed this life on Wednesday, August 2, 1995.

He was born January 3, 1941, in Portsmouth, Virginia. His early education was obtained in California Public Schools; he graduated from I.C. Norcom High School in 1959. He received his B.S. degree in Business Education from Hampton University and his Master's of Science in Business Education from Virginia State University.

His career as an educator began at I.C. Norcom High School, where he taught for nine (9) years and served as Business Education Department Chairperson and Commencement Chairperson. He taught at the former Cradock High School for twenty (20) years, and at the time of his death had been employed at Woodrow Wilson High School for the past three years.

He received many recognitions for his outstanding performances both in and out of the classroom. He received the Governor Mills E. Godwin's Virginia's Bicentennial Spruce Up Campaign Award, the Cradock High Principal's Award, and the SCA Teacher of the Year Award in 1987; he was honored as the only SCA Secondary Teacher of the year in 1989.

His role in the community was often unnoticed for he was a person of quietness, humility, peace and love. He served for two terms as campaign publicity manager for Councilman E.G. ``Tip'' Corprew Jr., and was appointed Speakers' Bureau Chairperson for Delegate Kenneth R. Melvin. He directed and coordinated numerous weddings, pageants, professional and business affairs. During his teaching career, he held membership in many professional organizations.

He is survived by his brother, Alfred E. Fane Jr. of Newport News; two devoted aunts, Miss Mamie E. Fane, Portsmouth, Va.; and Mrs. Marian S. Fane, San Pedro, Calif.; two nieces, Adrien Fane and Joycelyn Jenkins of Newport News; three first cousins, Mrs. Ethelyn F. Ingram, Chesapeake, Va.; Mrs. Rae F. Dowdy, San Pedro, Calif.; and Mrs. Marian F. Brooks, Rockville, Md.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Linda Fane, Newport News, Va.; other relatives; a host of friends; and his St. Paul's Church Family.

The family will receive friends at 1010 Potomac Avenue, Portsmouth, Va. The family will also assemble at 1010 Potomac Avenue for the funeral service. The wake will be held on Sunday, August 6, 1995, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Corprew Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 7, 1995, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, High and Washington streets, Portsmouth, Va., with Father Joseph Stowik officiating. PORTSMOUTH - Virginia Dare Garrenton, 81, of the 600 block of Surry St., died Aug. 5, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Mrs. Garrenton was a salesperson for numerous department stores in the area and a loving and devoted parent. She was a member of Surry St. Baptist Church and the widow of James Bray Garrenton, Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia G. Peterson of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Tammy L. Edwards of Portsmouth and James Arthur Bass and Jennifer E. Poland, both of Norfolk; and a great-grandson, Michael Bray Poland of Norfolk.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Norman March. The family will be at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. PORTSMOUTH - Bernice M. Gholson of the 900 block of Hamilton Ave., a retired teacher, died Aug. 3, 1995.

Mrs. Gholson was born in Tarboro, N.C. She retired from the Chesapeake public school system after 32 years. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, E.C.W. St. Maria's Guild, the vestry and was a former treasurer of the church. She was a member of the Merry Makers Club, Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc. (Iota Omega Chapter), Portsmouth Chapter National Epicureans and the Hamilton Avenue Neighborhood Club.

Survivors include her husband, Lemuel Gholson; two sisters, Mittie M. Coleman and Eleanor M. Ruffin; an aunt, Susanna Thomas; a niece, Kay C. Carter; a great-niece, Melissa G. Carter; and cousins, George C. Matthewson and Gladys H. Matthewson.

PORTSMOUTH - Edgar Goodman, 97, of the 2300 block of Chestnut St., died Aug. 1, 1995.

Mr. Goodman retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, was a member of Brighton Rock A.M.E. Zion Church, was a trustee and a steward, and was an Army veteran of World War I.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Goodman; two daughters, Annie Lee Jackson and Lucille Mayo, both of Norristown, Pa.; a son, Robert Goodman of Washington, D.C.; a stepson, Robert Doles of Portsmouth; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Brighton Rock A.M.E. Zion Church by the Rev. Leroy R. Blair and the Rev. Horace Cross. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Arrangements by Fisher Funeral Home.

VIRGINIA BEACH John H. Barnes Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH - John Henry Barnes Jr., 68, a longtime resident of Princess Anne County and a retired self-employed painter, died Aug. 4, 1995, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Mr. Barnes was born in Norfolk. He was a member of Nimmo United Methodist Church, the American Legion, was a veteran of World War II and the widower of Mary Lou Barnes.

Survivors include two sons, Edward R. ``Rudy'' Barnes and John Wesley Barnes, both of Virginia Beach; a stepson, George Watkins of Baltimore, Md.; his mother, Mary H. Barnes of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Edna Clark of Exeter, Calif., and Vivian ``Bootsie'' Deary of Virginia Beach; a brother, Wesley J. Barnes of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, by the Rev. John Morris and the Rev. Warren Reeves. Burial will be private at a later date. VIRGINIA BEACH - Lawrence R. ``Ray'' Meekins, 53, of the 2200 block of Oak St., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Meekins, died Aug. 5, 1995, in a Virginia Beach hospital.

Mr. Meekins was born in Norfolk. He was a retired systems analyst for Bell Atlantic after 30 years, a Methodist, a founding member of the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, volunteer in the Junior Achievement program and a member of Corinthian Masonic Lodge (NU)266 and the 82nd Airborne Division. He was an Army veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Survivors include his wife, Linda H. Meekins; a daughter, Tammy Anderson; stepdaughters, Laura and Iona Hough; and a son, Lanny Meekins and his wife, Eileen, all of Virginia Beach; a brother, H.A. Meekins Jr. of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two grandchildren, Nathan Meekins of Mississippi, OR, and Ashley Meekins of Virginia Beach; and his former wife, Barbara Meekins of Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Elliott Harvey Stevens, 63, of 1031 Coastaway Dr., died Saturday, August 5, 1995, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

He was a native of Princess Anne County and was the husband of Margie VanNostrand Stevens. He retired in 1990 after 35 years as a seaman with the Association of Maryland Pilots. He was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Seafarers International Union of North America - AFL-CIO.

In addition to his loving wife Margie, he is survived by three sons, William R. Farren, Walter R. Farren, and David M. Farren, all of Virginia Beach; one brother, Cecil Stevens Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Jean Pace and Mildred Day, both of Virginia Beach, and Margaret Dudley of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and two granddaughters.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, August 7 at 2 p.m. in the Maestas Funeral Home Baltic Avenue Chapel by the Rev. Mike Davidson. Burial will be at sea at a later date.
