Viola Lee Dinkins, of the 4000 block of Roebling Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 1995, in Hill Haven Nursing Center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Dinkins, the eldest daughter of 14 children, was born to the late Henry Franklin and Sarah Lownes Lee on Nov. 5, 1905, in Charlotte, N.C. She received her early education in the schools of North Carolina and graduated from Johnson C. Smith University with a B.A. degree in 1938. She earned a masters degree from Columbia University in New York, N.Y., in 1945. She was a retired primary teacher. When she came to Virginia Beach to live, she became a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Norfolk.
Survivors include her husband of eight years, Albert Danforth Dinkins, an outstanding community leader and native of Norfolk since 1900; a stepson, Albert C. Dinkins of Norfolk; two sisters, Lillian Lee Humphrey and Pauline Lee Tyler, and a brother, Alvis A. Lee, all of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a brother, J. Kenneth Lee and a sister, Annie Lee Holley of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Winona Lee Fletcher of Frankfort, Ky.; sisters-in-law, Maria Dinkins and Wilhelmina Smith, both of Norfolk.
A wake service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hale Funeral Chapel. The remains will be taken to Greensboro, N.C., for funeral services and burial with Community Funeral Home, Greensboro, N.C., in charge. Hale Funeral Home of Norfolk in charge of local arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a community service agency of one's choice.
