HERMAN B. SMITH

Herman Burkete Smith, 76, of the 2300 block of N. Bugle Drive, died Aug. 5, 1995, in his home.

Mr. Smith, a retired engineering technician, worked for Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 42 years. He retired March 31, 1983. He was born in Newport News. He was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, and a former member of the church council. He was also a member of Western Branch Masonic Lodge, (NU)189 A.F. and A.M. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with Gen. George Patton and the 90th Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge. His unit was called the ``Tough Hombres.''

Survivors include his wife, Eva Eppes Smith of Chesapeake; one daughter, Bertha Joanne Smith Rawls of Suffolk and son-in-law, Jerry; one son, Dwight W. Smith of Cary, N.C., and daughter-in-law, Judy; three sisters, Mildred Bauer of Jacksonville, Fla., Ann Durham of Natchez, Miss., Kathleen Gray of Suffolk; one brother, Frank Smith of McComb, Miss.; four grandchildren, Christine K. Ward of Suffolk, Beau F. Kearns of Newport News, Heather Marie Smith and Nicole Anne Smith, both of Cary, N.C.; four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Communion Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Dr. Dennis D. Buchholz and the Rev. Richard Browder. Entombment with Masonic Rites by Western Branch Lodge (NU)189 A.F. and A.M., will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, is in charge. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to either Holy Communion Lutheran Church or to Faith Lutheran Church, Building Fund, Bridge Road, Suffolk, Va.
