I find that I agree 100 percent with Gov. Jim Hunt of North Carolina and the people from the Roanoke River Basin; there's plenty of water in Hampton Roads. If we operated a regional water authority, there would be plenty of water to go around. Rather than do that, however, our political leaders years ago decided on a ``go it alone'' idea and the ``people'' have been paying the price since.
Lacking an essential utility, the Virginia Beach City Council has allowed unchecked development, trusting that someday some kind of miracle would provide the answer. We have paid millions in legal fees and the wages of people making a career out of the mythical Lake Gaston pipeline. I doubt that I'll live long enough to see the first drop of water come out of the end of the pipe.
Now, the city is going to have a small army of inspectors roaming about the city in an effort to catch violators watering lawns, washing cars, etc. I'm sure these inspectors aren't volunteering their time. So the people continue to pay.
It's about time that the city manager and City Council get over their ``pipe dream'' and come up with a practical solution to the water problem in Virginia Beach.
