A Virginia Beach man apparently drowned while swimming in Witchduck Lake on Sunday afternoon, police said.
Lemetric Braxton Rice, 21, of the 600 block of Newtown Road, was missing and presumed dead.
A friend of the victim told police he and Rice were swimming in the lake with three dogs. The man said that he and Rice had swum to shore, but Rice swam back into the lake. Rice then apparently began yelling for help.
The friend said he tried to rescue Rice, but the victim disappeared below the water's surface, police said.
Rescuers searched the lake in the 600 block of Goose Creek Road in the Lynnbrook Landing section of the city, police said. The case is under investigation.
