SPIVEY WON'T RUN FOR RE-ELECTION IN ISLE OF WIGHT

Supervisor L. Lorenzo ``Ren'' Spivey, who was hospitalized after a public breakdown in June, has withdrawn from the Windsor District race for the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors.

Spivey said in a letter to local Democratic Party Chairman Steve W. Edwards, ``My decision is based on several factors, some of which are personal and/or medical.''

Spivey, 48, said he wanted to allow as much time as possible for a replacement to be found for the Nov. 7 election. He won his seat in a special election last November and said he will serve until December to complete that term.

Contacted Monday at his Suffolk office, where he is an adult probation and parole officer, Spivey declined further comment.

Filing for the Windsor District seat will be reopened until 45 days before the election, County Registrar Ann Edwards said.

The local Democratic Party will hold a caucus to elect a new candidate at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Isle of Wight Courthouse. Edwards said potential candidates must file a written declaration of candidacy by 5 p.m. Monday, stating that they are registered voters in one of the three Windsor District precincts.

Potential candidates must declare that they intend to support Democratic candidates this fall, and they must either be in the Board of Supervisors meeting room or in line to get in by 7 p.m. Aug. 25.

Republicans or independents also may file for the post.

Spivey was being opposed in the election by independent Joni Griffin.

He was hospitalized in June after what law enforcement officials called an ``unusual incident'' in which Spivey started shouting and acting irrationally.

``I have learned a great deal from the experiences of the last several months and am thankful that I have had an opportunity to serve the people of the Windsor District, as well as Isle of Wight County as a whole,'' Spivey wrote.

Spivey is a former member of the Windsor Town Council and the County Planning Commission. by CNB
