OUTER BANKS FISHING IS FAIR FOR THE WEEKEND

Spot and croaker dominated the inshore fishing picture along the Outer Banks over the weekend.

Fishermen on Kitty Hawk Pier caught small bluefish and a few spot. Spot, croaker, small blues and a few mullet were taken by fishermen on Avalon Pier.

Nags Head Pier reported fair numbers of spot, croaker, a few bluefish and several keeper founder taken. A few small bottom fish were landed on Jennette's Pier.

Outer Banks Pier reported good spot fishing Saturday morning. Scattered spot and croaker, and a 2 1/4-pound sea bass were reported the remainder of the weekend.

On Hatteras Island, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught plenty of croaker. Croaker and a few spot were landed on Avon Pier.

Frisco Pier reported spot, croaker, a few bluefish and a 6-pound Spanish mackerel taken Saturday. Only a few bottom fish were landed Sunday, because of rough water stirred up by strong southwest winds.

Surf fishermen from Corolla to Oregon Inlet caught some scattered small bottom fish and tailor bluefish.

Around Oregon Inlet, croaker and a few gray trout were taken from the catwalk on the southern end of the Oregon Inlet bridge. Some sheepshead and black drum were landed from around the bridge pilings.

Good catches of mullet, a few croaker and some pompano were beached in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton Saturday. Lots of croaker were taken Sunday in the area.

Spanish mackerel were landed Saturday morning at Cape Point. Some bluefish were taken on metal and cut bait later in the day. Some bottom fish and a few bluefish were taken Sunday on the north side of Cape Point.

Lots of croaker and some gray trout were beached Saturday from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet, but fishing in the area was slow Sunday.

Inshore trolling was slow around Oregon Inlet during the weekend.

Headboats caught plenty of triggerfish and sea bass in the ocean, and lots of croaker in the sound Saturday. No trips were run Sunday.

Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet Saturday. Some nice gaffers were reported, including a 58-pounder by the Dream Girl. Some wahoo also were taken. Billfishing was fair. Releases included a white marlin and two sailfish by the Hooker, and a sailfish by the Phideaux. Most of the billfish action was around the Triple O.

Dolphin fishing off Oregon Inlet was fairly good Sunday, but fishing conditions were poor. Billfish and tuna were scarce.

Dolphin fishing was good in deep water off Hatteras Saturday, with the best action around the rock pile. There was a good showing of billfish below the rock pile. Fishing on Sunday was slow because of rough seas.

Northeast winds kept offshore boats in port Monday. Billfish action should be good off the Dare Coast when conditions moderate, allowing fishing to resume.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 69 degrees Monday. by CNB
