Post 280 Chesapeake rolled to an eight-run lead through the first four innings, then held on to defeat Post 176 Springfield, 11-9, in a first-round game of the State American Legion Tournament Monday at Liberty University.
Post 280, which finished second in the tournament last year, will play Poquoson Post 273 today at 4 p.m. in a winners'-bracket game at City Stadium.
Mike Cuddyer had three hits and drove in three runs to lead a 13-hit attack for Post 280.
Cuddyer's two-run double highlighted a seven-run fourth inning that gave Post 280 a 10-2 lead. But starting pitcher Nick James faltered in the middle innings and a shaky defense allowed Springfield to get back into the game. The winners made five errors.
Mike Hoskins, Ed Gosman and Alton Todd all had two hits each for Post 280. by CNB
