A captain-and-crew meeting for those planning to participate in the 11th Annual Kiwanis Club Fishing Tournament will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at Smithfield Station.
The tournament begins at 6 a.m. on Saturday at the restaurant and marina on Cypress Creek, said tournament chairman Mark A. Marshall, chief of the Smithfield Police Department.
Marshall said the tournament will end when the fish are weighed at 4:30 p.m.
Fee is $50 per boat for a maximum of four people. For each additional person per boat, and for people who want to fish from docks at the marina, it is $12.50.
Proceeds will go to local charities. Last year, 39 boats competed, and $2,400 was raised. Marshall said about 45 boats are expected to participate this year.
Fishermen will be angling for the biggest spot, trout, croaker, flounder, bluefish and catfish.
Marshall said the biggest spot caught last year was just under a pound. The largest croaker weighed in at 1.8 pounds; trout, 1.5 pounds; flounder, 2.5 pounds; bluefish, 1.4 pounds and catfish, 11.2 pounds.
``You're not talking about catching tremendous fish, but this tournament allows the amateur to compete and have a chance at winning,'' Marshall said.
First- and second-place prizes will be awarded for each category. Top winners get $100; second place, $75.
Fishermen - and women - can register the night of the captain's meeting, or before the tournament by calling Marshall at 357-3247. by CNB
