The City Council on Tuesday doubled fines for parking illegally in spaces designated for handicapped drivers.
The minimum penalty for parking in the reserved spaces will rise from $50 to $100 if paid on time and from $100 to $200 if paid late.
The fines also were extended to cover those who drive cars with handicapped plates or stickers but are not handicapped. Under the new law, which the council approved unanimously, such drivers can use the restricted spaces only if the drivers are transporting disabled passengers.
The new fines and restrictions cover all restricted spaces, on both public and private property.
At the Police Department's request, the ordinance also clarified some other city parking policies:
Vehicles parked diagonally or perpendicular to the curb can be ticketed unless the area is specifically striped for such parking.
Vehicles with ``for sale'' signs parked on public streets can be ticketed. This measure is specifically aimed at people who basically run used-car lots on city streets.
Parking scofflaws who ignore a ticket for more than 30 days can be fined an additional $50 on top of the $50 penalty currently imposed for failing to pay within 14 days.
