Virginia Power said Tuesday it fired 17 managers as part of an ongoing program to make the company more efficient. The utility intends to eliminate 321 positions this year through dismissals or attrition. In all, 29 management positions were cut in Tuesday's announcement, including 12 positions that were already vacant. Virginia Power spokesman William H. Byrd said the Richmond-based utility anticipates firing 130 more employees by summer's end. Another 130 customer service slots will be eliminated when electronic bill payment kiosks are introduced in supermarkets and other locations.
