A real estate company promised Monday night to address problems at several houses in Pughsville Estates, a new development in the historic Pughsville community.
William E. Shelton, principal broker with Coldwell Banker Harbor Group, and several city planning and inspections officials met with about 100 residents in an often-raucous gathering in a church.
The session followed several residents' complaints about problems with drainage, flooding and landscaping at their homes. The houses, built by developer F.R. ``Rick'' Byers II and Coldwell Banker, cost from $90,000 to $100,000 and are in a predominantly black community that was founded by freed slaves.
Shelton said he will take lists of problems from residents - at the Coldwell Banker trailer in the 5100 block of Townpoint Road - and act on them.
He also said the developers will discontinue trying to buy lots from longtime residents, a practice that has resulted in complaints.
Pughsville, which straddles the Suffolk and Chesapeake line, has a rugged history, including a failed redevelopment effort and a fire that destroyed much of the community because it lacked hydrants and water.
Water and sewerage have since been installed, and, through Byers' project, many dilapidated homes in the area have been replaced. by CNB
