A laborer, injured Monday afternoon when a dump truck overturned and spilled debris on him, has lost part of a leg and part of a hand.
Ferhat Bilgin, 25, a Turkish resident who was staying with a friend in Chesapeake, was crushed beneath a load of brick and concrete at the John C. Holland Enterprise landfill in the 4800 block of Nansemond Parkway, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.
Bilgin's left hand was mangled, his right shoulder dislocated and his left leg broken, Simpkins said. He was taken by Nightingale emergency helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Monday night, doctors amputated most of Bilgin's left leg and part of his left hand, Simpkins said.
Bilgin, who speaks no English, was listed in stable condition Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The truck driver, Betty R. Rogerson of the 1000 block of Longstreet Lane, Suffolk, had started dumping the load when it shifted, and the truck turned on its right side, police said. Concrete and bricks fell on Bilgin, who had been standing beside the truck.
