The editorial-page cartoon Aug. 7 demeaning Janet Reno, while depicting David Koresh as an innocent pussycat up a tree is an example of extreme stupidity and disregard of factual information. Apparently the person who selected this cartoon for publication ignored the results of the Waco hearings/investigation, which showed that (1) Koresh was an insane, evil child molester, (2) the Republicans who ran this show (the public hearings) were obviously sucking up to the NRA and ended up looking very stupid and, finally (3) Janet Reno came out of it looking pretty good.
True, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms seems to have some problems, and the clarity of hindsight reveals some of its mistakes. However, it remains that the cartoon was asinine, disconnected from reality and certainly not a valid comment on the event.
