SELMA W. SPENCER

Selma Wise Spencer, 89, of Ocracoke Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1995, in Sentara Norfolk Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Newton and Emmie Langston Wise and the widow of Benjamin Early Spencer. She was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Mrs. Spencer graduated from Atlantic Christian College with a degree in Education. She retired from the North Carolina School System.

Selma began her teaching career in the Alamance County district and the Pamlico County area. She spent the rest of her teaching career at the Ocracoke School as a teacher for 24 years and principal for two years.

Mrs. Spencer is survived by three half-sisters, Amber Ballance of Ocracoke, Stella Saunders of Chesapeake, Va., Bettie Rice of Arapahoe, N.C.; two half-brothers, David C. Hardison of Falls Church, Va., and Albert U. Hardison of New Bern, N.C. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leon ``Dunk'' Wise and a half-sister, Minnie Manning.

Funeral services will be conductd at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 1995, in Ocracoke United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Johnson. Burial will be in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. Mrs. Spencer will be placed in the church on Friday at 1 p.m. and will remain there until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends at the residence in Ocracoke Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Twiford's Funeral Home, Ghent Chapel, 1920 Colley Ave., Norfolk, is handling the arrangements.
