SMOOTHER SEAS MAKE FOR SMOOTHER FISHING

After a couple of days of no offshore action because of rough seas, a few charter boats went to the Gulf Stream Wednesday. A dozen boats released about 30 billfish and also found some yellowfin tuna around the 800 Loran line. Dolphin fishing was fair and wahoo fishing was good.

Billfish action was also good off Hatteras, with several boats releasing at least two. A few dolphin, good numbers of wahoo and some nice tuna were taken in the area.

Headboat action around Oregon Inlet was fairly good during the morning. Anglers landed lots of nice croaker and pigfish in deep water around the Oregon Inlet bridge on the last of the incoming tide. Afternoon headboat catches were mediocre.

Pier fishing along the north beaches was good for bottom fish as the water was fairly dirty. On Kitty Hawk Pier, anglers caught nice-size spot and croaker during the day. Avalon Pier reported a few spot, mullet and small flounder taken. Scattered small spot and croaker were landed on Nags Head Pier. On Jennette's Pier, lots of spot were caught during the morning. Action was slow in the afternoon. Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier had a good morning catching spot, croaker, a few mullet and a sand tiger shark. Some spot, croaker and a few blues were landed in the afternoon.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported some 1-pound croaker and small spot taken. Anglers on Avon Pier caught a few sea mullet, croaker and spot. Frisco Pier fisherman landed a few bottom fish during the morning, but very little in the afternoon.

Small bottom fish were taken in the surf from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Along the beach from Rodanthe to Avon, some croakers and a few pompano were landed. Some nice mullet and flounder were taken along the beach south of Cape Point. At Ramp 55, some gray trout, mullet and tailor blues were caught.

Billfishing should be good in the Gulf Stream over the next few days because of the recent northeaster,
