The Air Force on Wednesday was investigating a midair collision that damaged two F-15C Eagle jet fighters - one from Virginia - over the Gulf of Mexico.
Both planes landed safely and neither pilot was injured in the Tuesday incident about 85 miles south of this Florida Panhandle base. But one jet had a damaged nose and the other had a broken right tail stabilizer.
The planes were involved in air combat maneuvers during a training flight at the time of the collision, said 1st Lt. Brenda Campbell, a spokeswoman for the 33rd Fighter Wing here.
One of the pilots was from the 33rd and the other from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, Campbell said.
The collision came less than a week after the Air Force honored the 33rd for having the best flight safety record in 1994 among fighter, attack and reconnaissance units.
