Gorge on spaghetti and help three Chesapeake teens realize their dream to cheer at the 1996 National Football League's Pro Bowl in Hawaii.
Three Oscar F. Smith High School students won the opportunity to cheer at the NFL all-star game this February.
The winners are Jesse Lambe, a rising junior and the 15-year-old daughter of Barbara and Kevin Lambe; Bobbie Riley, a rising sophomore and the 15-year-old daughter of Keith Riley and Diane and Walter Eli; and Kelly Weaver, a rising junior and the 16-year-old daughter of Suzanne and Bob Weaver.
Jessie and Kelly are members of the Oscar F. Smith High School varsity cheerleaders, and Bobbie is the captain of the school's junior varsity squad.
They showed their stuff at an Eastern Cheerleader Association summer camp held last June at the Oscar F. Smith High campus. The three impressed the judges and received high marks for their enthusiasm, performance, stunts, gymnastic ability, cheers and chants, attitude and ambition.
They've got the invitation, now they need to raise the money to go.
That's where Bill Gray, owner of the Double Deuce Restaurant and Lounge, comes in.
He's throwing a fund-raising spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Aug. 19. He's donating his club and the food to help raise money for the trip.
Sound generous? Well, that's Bill Gray's way.
Ask most Oscar Smith High school groups, teams and causes and you'll get a big thumbs up if you mention the name Bill Gray. He's always there to help support community causes.
``It's just my way of giving back to the community,'' he once said about one of his many fund-raisers. ``I love the South Norfolk community and am ready to help it as much as I can. I feel more people in the community and in the business sector could do more to help out with these worthy causes.''
``We knew Mr. Gray is very community oriented,'' Lambe said. ``Suzanne (Weaver) contacted him and he said, `This is what I'll do for you.' He offered us all the food and the use of his place. All we needed to do was come up with the printing for the tickets.''
Portlock Printing completed the equation when it offered to print the group's tickets and fliers.
But the fund raising won't end with the spaghetti dinner.
The BJK Cheer Hawaii group will hold a garage sale Sept. 23 at 805 Water Elm Court. In addition, Gray will hold a southern buffet Sept. 16 and a seafood buffet tentatively is scheduled for Oct. 14. Both events will take place at the Double Deuce. MEMO: The BJK Cheer Hawaii all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner, which includes
