MACARTHUR CAR A CROWD-PLEASER 1950 CHRYSLER IS A POPULAR ATTRACTION AT THE MEMORIAL IN NORFOLK.

The 1950 Chrysler Crown Imperial limousine, used by Gen. MacArthur

in Tokyo while he served as supreme commander for the Allied Powers,

is an artifact of the occupation of Japan. The car is at MacArthur

Memorial in downtown Norfolk. A new exhibit, ``Downfall! Conquest of

Japan,'' opens at the museum in MacArthur Square today at 10 a.m.

The passenger compartment has two upholstered jump seats. Luxury

features include Butler-finish nickel trim, electric windows and two

large ashtrays with electric cigarette lighters in the arm rests.

The front grille of the Chrysler, like the rest of the car, is

completely original. MacArthur's plate, with five steel stars,

indicated his status.

Driver Calvin Eastwood carved his name - as others had done before

him - on the right in the leather on the driver's door.
