Leon Westley George, 83, of Virginia Beach, died Aug. 10, 1995.
Mr. George retired as the chief civilian ships pilot for Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth. Prior to that he was a civilian ships pilot and tug master for the Navy at Norfolk Naval Station.
Born in Foxwells, Va., on the Northern Neck in 1912, Mr. George was a waterman on the Chesapeake Bay and the Rappahannock River. He began his piloting career in 1937 on board the tugboat, The Dauntless, (NU)12, of the Dauntless Towing Lines, New York.
Mr. George was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Norfolk, Va., where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Men's Adult (NU)3 Bible Class. He was Past Master and honorary member of George W. Wright Masonic Lodge (NU)346 and was a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 35th Masonic District. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonary, the Khedive Temple of Norfolk, and the John Walters Royal Arch Chapter No. 68.
Mr. George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elma Harris George; two sons, Kenneth L. George Sr. of Chesapeake and R. Harvey George of Richmond; two daughters, Sylvia G. Witherspoon of Hampton, and Yvonne G. Glass of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Henry S. George of White Stone, Va.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church, corner of Princess Anne and Sewells Point Roads, by the Rev. Fred Braswell. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Masonic Rites will be accorded at the grave. The family will be at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m., today.
