Alice Conner Wayland, 86, of the 2400 block of Bidgood Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mrs. Wayland was born in Windsor, N.C. On May 20, 1932, she married the late Russell Barborie ``Buck'' Wayland Jr. They were married for 62 years. She was a retired secretary in general accounting for the U.S. Civil Service Commission.
She was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, where she served as Deaconess Emeritus and taught Sunday School for over 50 years, Past Matron of Tidal Wave Chapter (NU)9 Order of the Eastern Star, Past Grand Chaplain of Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Va., Past President of Tidewater Woman's Club, a Life member of the Va. Federation of Garden Clubs, member of the Richard Dale & Sterling Point Garden Clubs, Past President of the Traveler's Aid Society, member of the State Association of Parliamentarians and a member of the Portsmouth Concert.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Russell B. Wayland III of Palm Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Coral Barborie Wayland and Samuel W. Wayland; four sisters, Anne Lee Madray, Estelle C. Shipp, Virginia C. Harrell, all of Portsmouth, and Helen C. White of Austin, Texas; a brother, William Frank Conner Jr. of Suffolk, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Grady Rawls Conner.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Port Norfolk Baptist Church by Dr. Ector L. Hamrick. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will be at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, Sunday for visitation where an Eastern Star service will be conducted at 4 p.m. with visitation to follow until 6 p.m.
