BABE RUTH TEAMS GROOMING PLAYERS FOR CURRITUCK

Judging by Currituck County's Babe Ruth softball teams, Currituck County High School's softball program should be well stocked for years to come.

The Currituck County All-Stars 11-12 year-old team, coached by Mike Wilson, recently won the state championship. The 9-10 year-old-team, coached by Sheri Wilson, placed in the top eight teams in the state during the double elimination tournament in Asheville.

The 11-12 year-old team mounted a tremendous comeback to beat Blue Ridge of Black Mountain 15-14 in eight innings. The Currituck team was down 14-8 in the fifth inning. They scored three runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 14-11 and then added three more in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 14-14. Currituck held Blue Ridge in the top of the eighth, then belted four straight hits in the bottom of the inning to win the game. Mandy Kellam's single to center scored the game-winning run.

``It was a tough comeback,'' Mike Wilson said. ``It finally started coming together and we could tell they were getting tired. We felt a lot better when we got the three runs. It was happening so fast we didn't have a chance to think about it.''

For the four-game series, Kellam batted .714, Kelley Banks hit .625, Samantha Sanderlin batted .563, Ashley Wilson and Kelley Lassiter both hit

In the 9-10 tournament, Currituck County went 2-2 and finished in the top eight. In a 25-17 win over Blue Ridge American, Erin Wilson was 4-for-5 with a homer, Stephanie LaShond was 4-for-5 with two homers, Samantha Duncan was 4-for-5 with a triple, and Nikki Graham was 4-for-5 with a double and triple. Danielle Hartman was the winning pitcher.

Currituck also defeated North Wayne of Goldsboro 12-10. Wilson was 4-for-4 with a double and triple, LaShond was 2-for-3, and Hartman again picked up the win, striking out five and allowing no walks.

Currituck lost 20-12 to Pitt County National and then were whitewashed by Pitt County American 20-0 in the third round of the tournament. by CNB
