SHARKS ROUGH UP ERROR-PRONE RENEGADES

The Hampton Roads Sharks made the most of the breaks Saturday night, defeating the Baltimore Renegades, 35-13, before a reported crowd of 3,500 at the Center for Effective Learning.

Hampton Roads scored on a pair of fumble recoveries in the end zone and a 90-yard punt return. And it's a good thing, as the Sharks amassed only 9 yards rushing and 110 passing. Hampton Roads got only five first downs to the Renegades' 17.

``Exactly right, we got lucky with some good plays,'' said wide receiver Charles Mott, who scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Dimitri Delgado and added the long punt return early in the second quarter.

The breaks came early for Hampton Roads and put the Renegades in a hole.

Jeffrey Dawson opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, when the snap went over Baltimore punter Mike Rodgers' head and into the end zone, where Dawson pounced on it.

Mott scored his first touchdown five minutes later, but Baltimore tried to get itself back into the game three minutes later, with Gary Oakes snagging a Joe Baker pass from 19 yards out.

But Mott dashed the Renegades' momentum a minute into the second quarter, when he fielded Rodgers' punt at the Sharks' 10, shook off a tackler and dashed down the left sideline.

The big plays continued for the Sharks on the ensuing kickoff, when Dexter Stephenson pounced on Monte Bowens' fumble. Two plays later, Delgado lobbed a nice pass to the near corner of the end zone, where Tim Carr leaped over a considerably shorter opponent for put the Sharks up, 28-7, at the end of the half.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Sanford Dowell put the game out of reach six minutes into the fourth when he recovered a fumbled put in the end zone.

Baltimore rounded out the scoring with just under seven minutes left when Gary Kinard caught a 41-yard touchdown toss from backup quarterback Mitch Bullock. by CNB
