This summer, while millions of Americans are enjoying the natural beauty of our parks, oceans and streams, Congress has been busy gutting the laws that have successfully protected them from irresponsible development.
Laws designed to preserve our natural heritage for generations to come are being rewritten to benefit a few - namely, powerful industries with deep pockets and contacts in high places.
Pristine land and wildlife, destroyed by strip mining, overzealous timber harvesting and unsightly development, can never be reclaimed. They are lost forever.
I think Congressmen Pickett, Bateman and Sisisky owe those of us who cherish the beauty of this land an explanation as to why they voted to remove environmental laws that regulate sewage runoff, pesticides in foods and contaminated drinking water and that guard against the destruction of wetlands. Whose interests are they really serving?
