A motorist was in custody on a hit-and-run charge late Saturday, 24 hours after a Peninsula man was struck and killed.
Jerry Carnell Cheatham, 29, was jailed in lieu of $50,000 bond in connection with the death Friday of Kevin Hobson, whose body was discovered by a police patrol at Jefferson Avenue and 46th Street about 11 p.m.
A police spokeswoman knew early Saturday only that Hobson, who was 35 and lived in the 600 block of Nansemond Avenue in Newport News, had been struck by a vehicle traveling at high speed.
A plea for the public's help brought investigators a tip that Cheatham's 1993 Chrysler New Yorker had been spotted with damage to its front end. Several hours later, Cheatham, of the 2300 block of Jefferson, turned himself in at the police department's South Patrol Division headquarters.
