World War II was total involvement. Not a family went untouched in some way. The war effort dominated every aspect of life, invaded every corner of our culture. When it ended with the surrender of Japan on Aug. 15, 1945 (Aug. 14 in Hampton Roads), the United States emerged as a very different nation. Those who fought, and those who supported them from the home front, had changed as well.
A special section of today's newspaper is dedicated to a generation of Americans who came of age in warfare. Their bonds to their families, friends and country were shaped by the times, by the things they lived through, and the things that they prayed no later generation would have to endure. To some, 50 years later, it is still the defining experience of their lives.
Look for their stories in today's special section, ``War Bonds.'' MEMO: PILOT ONLINE
