SHORTSIGHTED AND MISLEADING ADVICE

I read with interest your article ``Glasses may worsen young children's vision'' (Aug. 1). Several hours later I saw my patient, Emerald, an adorable 4-year-old girl who first came to see me six months ago. At that time she was legally blind in her left eye. On the day of this article, Emerald's vision was 20/30 in each eye, thanks to early detection and the help of glasses.

It is wonderful to disseminate the latest research in the medical field. On the other hand, I hope that readers are not mislead by this information.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology, Academy of Pediatrics and Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus have tried to educate those involved with young children about the importance of early visual screening to prevent irreversible damage to the eyes. Emerald's vision was saved by her glasses and early detection. I hope that this article does not cause parents to hesitate in seeking ocular care for their little ones and that our efforts of early intervention to improve visual outcomes can continue.
