The International Association of Characters celebrates the eighth day of the eighth month as International Characters' Day. This association of James Ownby of Phoenix or Tucson or someplace in the Southwest, claimed as honorary vice presidents both Art Linkletter and Jimmy Durante. Many well-known people were members.
Its only membership requirements, as I recall, were to be nominated, to pay a $1 initiation fee, to smile with the corners of one's mouth turned up and to ``be a character if there ever was one.''
I am wondering now, some 15 years later, if there are any members who read The Virginian-Pilot. I would be happy to hear from them!
