``Cutting Pensions'' (editorial, Aug. 8) brought to mind a poem whose author is unknown to me. The poem sums up the thrust of your editorial perfectly.
God and soldier we adore
In time of danger, not before.
But danger past, and all things righted,
God is ignored and the soldier slighted.
This poem expresses the attitude of too many of our populace and our elected officials.
I pray that we learn from the lessons of the past (the 1920s and 1930s) so that we are not required to repeat the mistakes made then. I see too many indications that our leaders, especially our president, have not learned. Clinton looks more and more like Neville Chamberlain.
