GUNMAN SHOT IN RAMPAGE AT LANDFILL

A gunman who went on a shooting rampage at a private landfill over the weekend was wounded when a bystander shot him in the neck.

Charles Carr Jr., 46, of the 2400 block of Broadnax Circle, Chesapeake, was in serious condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Monday afternoon, said a hospital spokeswoman. He had been shot with a large-caliber handgun, said Suffolk police spokesman Mike Simpkins.

The incident happened at the John C. Holland Enterprise Landfill in the 4800 block of Nansemond Parkway about 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Carr and the foreman argued, then the foreman walked toward the office and Carr opened fire at the building, shooting with a gun in each hand, Simpkins said.

Carr, a gun dealer, had other weapons in his pockets and in his truck, Simpkins said. Police recovered 15 guns and two knives.

Carr apparently was upset that the foreman would not give him information on a former employee, police said.

Three men who had come to the landfill for target practice witnessed the shooting. Carr pointed a gun at them, Simpkins said, and one fired two shots. A bullet struck Carr in his neck and went out the other side.

No one else was injured, including the foreman, who ran inside the building and hit the floor when the shooting began.

Police have obtained an arrest warrant against Carr on a charge of attempted murder.
