The Isle of Wight County Library/Smithfield Branch has ended the children's Summer Reading Program for the year.
It was quite successful, with 412 children participating. Since June 1, 14,573 books were circulated, of which 7,770 were children's; 1,511 children attended the special weekly events; and 10,701 people visited the library.
A program such as this could not be successful without the support of the community. I would like to extend a very special thank-you to the following businesses, civic groups and individuals who supported the program with monetary donations, contribution of specific items or by giving their time:
George Dashiell American Legion Post 49, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Gamma Tau Chapter 5901, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Xi Delta Psi Chapter, Burger King, Catidid Celebrations Inc., Mrs. Charles H. Chapman, Mac and Edna Cofer, Sally Crocker, Farm Fresh, Katherine L. Gwaltney, Hallwood Enterprises Inc., Jean Harrell, Anne Hubbard of The Collage, Isle of Wight Academy, Isle of Wight County Men's Organization, Isle of Wight Materials Co. Inc., Isle of Wight Republican Woman's Club, Little Caesar's Pizza, McDonald's, Monette Information Systems, Mervyn and Dorothy Rhodes, Simpson's Pharmacy, Smithfield Elks Lodge 65, Smithfield Junior Woman's Club, Smithfield Library Association, Smithfield Medical Center Inc., Smithfield Middle School art students, Smithfield Police Department, Smithfield Rotary Club, Smithfield Station, Virginia Power Surry Nuclear Power Station, VFW Post 8545 and the Woman's Club of Smithfield.
I would also like to thank all the parents/grandparents/care givers who saw the value of a program that keeps the children in touch with books and who took the necessary steps to allow these children to participate in this beneficial program. To the adults and children who donated the money so that specific books could be purchased for the program, I offer a very special thank-you. My heartfelt thanks are extended to the many parents and non-parents who helped with the special events. I offer my congratulations to the children who took part in the program. You did a wonderful job! Thanks to Lois Chapman who made the lovely banner depicting scenes related to the program theme: ``Amazing Library Kids.'' To the many adult volunteers who worked the circulation desk and to the six teenage volunteers who worked so diligently shelving all those returned books, you did a beautiful job! Thanks so much for your dedication. To the library staff - Sibyl Gillespie, Carrol Minton, Dorothy Rhodes and Karen Zukosky - who were always there with great ideas and with the willingness to tackle any task, I offer my sincere and deep appreciation for a job well done. You are the best!
I look forward to working with each of you again for the 1996 Summer Reading Program.
