Aug. 15, 1944, marked the end of an era for United States citizens when the great empire of Japan finally bowed to U.S. forces. The war in Europe had been over for several months.
For many who lived through those years of war, the memories are still clear after 50 years.
Whether those memories come from a former soldier who fought in Europe alongside Allied forces, a young Marine stationed in the South Pacific or simply from a family member left in the States to wait, worry and barter for ordinary things like gas and sugar, the memories have now become history.
During this special time of anniversary commemorating 50 years since the end of World War II, this is a collection of war memories from local historians.
