TRAILS PROGRAM HONORED

Local organizers of the National Trails Day program at First Landing/Seashore State Park were honored this week as having one of the 10 best programs in the United States.

Patricia Vahey, who organized the trails event June 3 in Virginia Beach, received the Trails for Tomorrow Award on Monday in Carson City, Nev. She represents the Friends of First Landing/Seashore State Park.

The event at the state park was one of 3,000 held nationwide, according to the American Hiking Society. National Trails Day is an annual event held to promote the benefits of trails and to encourage people to become involved in maintaining and developing trails.

This is the second year that DuPont Cordura has sponsored the Trails for Tomorrow Awards program. The award consists of $500 cash from DuPont Cordura and about $2,000 in merchandise donated by outdoor apparel and equipment manufacturers.

DuPont also paid expenses for Vahey to attend the awards ceremony, which was held in conjunction with the Outdoor Retailer Show this week in Reno.

In addition to a daylong series of trails events at First Landing/Seashore State Park on National Trails Day, a coalition of 11 Hampton Roads outdoor organizations adopted all 19 miles of trails and the bayside shoreline in the park, according to park manager Fred Hazelwood IV. by CNB
