One recent Sunday morning the gospel told the parable of the Good Samaritan. After mass, I stopped to tell our pastor that on the previous day, when I had sustained a nasty fall, I had been privileged to encounter five ``Good Samaritans.''
Two young men picked me up off the sidewalk on Lynnhaven Parkway and helped me to the home of two other strangers who took me in without hesitation.
I don't think they would wish their names mentioned, so I will just say that the wife, who appeared to be a semi-invalid, bathed my wounds and insisted that I permit her husband to drive me to pick up some food and then take me home. At the seafood restaurant, the young man behind the counter was extremely concerned - I was a pretty horrid sight! - and insisted on helping me into the waiting car.
My pastor was truly moved and his face and words reflected my gratitude for such kindness in a world seemingly so full of horror stories.
