JAMES F. MURPHY

James Franklin Murphy, 82, of the 100 block of 2nd St., died Aug. 15, 1995, in Albemarle Hospital, in Elizabeth City.

A native of Ivor, he was a son of the late Henry P. and Louisa Crumpler Murphy. Mr. Murphy, a long time resident of Suffolk, had retired, after 38 years, from Virginia National Bank as assistant cashier and manager of the West End office. He served in World War II with the 252nd Engineer Combat Battalion, European Theater, and was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 57. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 30, Suffolk.

When living in Suffolk, he was a member of Travelers Protective Association, German Club, treasurer and vice president of the Cosmopolitan Club, treasurer of the Suffolk unit of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers, director of the Retail Merchants Association, president of the Suffolk Swimming Pool Board, active in the PTA, a sponsor of the Junior Hundred, held a real estate broker's license and was a member of the Suffolk Christian Church, where he served on the senior board of deacons.

In Kill Devil Hills, he had served on the Board of Commissioners and the planning board, represented Kill Devil Hills on the Albemarle Commission and Dare County Tourist Bureau. He was a member of the Nags Head Woods of the Nature Conservancy and of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, where he was a steward and administrative board member.

Survivors include his wife, Chlorine H. Murphy; two daughters, Mary Lynn Murphy of Newport News and Dinah M. Everett of Suffolk; son-in-law, Robert L. Everrett Sr.; and a grandson, R. Lee Everett Jr.; one sister, June Murphy Looney, all of Suffolk.

Memorial services will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Brad Bradshaw. Memorial donations may be made to Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, Kitty Hawk, N.C., Benn's United Methodist Church, Smithfield, Va., or Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News. The family will be at 19148 Meadow Drive, Suffolk. R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
