Lt. Cmdr. Russell Austin Harrell, 87, a retired U.S. Navy officer, of Jack Frost Road, died Aug. 15, 1995, in Virginia Beach.
Lt. Cmdr. Harrell served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years. He was born in Whigham, Ga., and was an active member of Azalea Baptist Church. He was former deacon of the church, and he also served on several committies. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served on the USS Savannah (AS-8), USS Concord (CL-10), USS Alcor (AR-10), USS Wyoming (AG-17), USS Salt Lake City, USS Hector (AR-7), USS Ajax (AR-6).
He is survived by his beloved wife and family, Mae Harrell of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Shirley Ann Gurney of Winter Park, Fla.; one son, Fred A. Harrell of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Gail Raymond, Susan Keitel and Kim Gentile; and two great-grandchildren, Christina Raymond and Austin Raymond.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Azalea Baptist Church by Dr. Danny Owens. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Azalea Baptist Church Hunger Fund, 3314 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, Va. 23518. Military honors will be accorded at the grave.
