Virgel William Gunter Jr., 74, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1995.
Mr. Gunter retired as a Foreman with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1974, after 34 years of service. He also was retired as a purchasing agent with Citizens Trust Bank in Portsmouth.
Born in Beckley, W.Va., in 1921, Mr. Gunter completed high school and attended college in Beckley. He came to Portsmouth in 1940. Upon completion of a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Piedmont, he returned to Portsmouth in 1945, where he continued working at the shipyard until his retirement there.
Mr. Gunter attended Westhaven Church of God in Portsmouth. He also was a member of the Churchland Masonic Lodge No. 276 and the Portsmouth Scottish Rites Bodies. An avid hunter, he was an active member of Camp PD Hunt Club in Como, N.C. and the Holland Hunt Club.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Gunter; daughter and son-in-law, Linda D. and J. David Word of Chesapeake; son and daughter-in-law, V. Wayne and Vivien M. Gunter of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four sisters, V. Ferne Edmonds of Halifax, Va., Zelma J. Easley of Roanoke, Genevieve I. Reed of Barboursville, W.Va., and Geraldine ``Gerry'' Sigmund of Beckley, W.Va. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kelley D. Word of Chesapeake and Casey W. and Gregory W. Gunter of Winston-Salem, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Masonic Rites will be accorded at the gravesite. The family will be at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 8 p.m.
