VIRGINIA DARE'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED

On Friday, the National Park Service and the Roanoke Island Historical Association will celebrate the birth of Virginia Dare.

The festivities commemorate the birth of Virginia Dare on Aug. 18, 1587; she was the first child born to English parents in the New World. Admission to the day's events, except for The Lost Colony drama, is free.

The festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. on the courtyard in front of the Lindsay Warren Visitor Center with a production of ``Beauty and the Beast'' by the Children's Theatre of The Lost Colony Players' Professional Theater Workshop. At 11 a.m., the video ``Roanoke: The Lost Colony'' will be shown in the visitor center, followed by a ranger-guided tour of the site at 11:30 a.m.

The Children's Theatre will return at 2:15 p.m. with an original production about the life and times of young King Arthur to be held on the courtyard. The 3 p.m. showing of ``Roanoke: The Lost Colony'' will be followed by a 25-minute ranger-guided tour. At 4 p.m. a demonstration of Elizabethan swordplay will be held at the entrance to the Elizabethan Gardens.

The Virginia Dare Day festivities conclude with Elizabethan entertainment outside the Waterside Theatre at 7 p.m. The show will feature juggling acts, madrigal singers, street vendors, and a gala performance of ``The Lost Colony'' at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for seniors and active military, and $6 for children 11 and under.
